Integrity

Jill watched him from across the room. His movements fluid and unique. She felt drawn to him but, she couldn't betray her friend. She blinked and shook her head, focusing on her boyfriend, Sam, instead. If she were to do what she wanted so badly to do, she would lose more than one friend. Sam was making a joke and she laughed, half-heartedly, still focused on the turmoil of her desires. His best friend, James, came closer to their group with his girlfriend, Mandy, close behind. James put his hand on Jill's shoulder and asked how she was doing. Jill smiled and used a softer tone, sending out the feelings she had inside of her without words. James squeezed her gently and turned to Sam.

At the end of the night, they walked together to their apartments. Sam was getting clingy again and Jill was feeling pressured. She stood up to him and asked him to go home alone. Feeling hurt, he left without meaning his last words. Jill heard them anyway and they echoed in her head the whole walk home. She laid on her bed, wondering what she should do about Sam when she got a message from James. Curious, she began responding to his words and accepting when he offered to stop by her house to speak in person. Unsure of how it made her feel, she let it happen, choosing to let fate show her the answers she sought.

He moved closer to her allowing the unspoken tension between them increase with each breath. Jill panicked. She knew it was a bad idea but, she didn't stop it from happening either. James grabbed her hips and unbuttoned her pants. She stared blankly as he pulled her pants down and began touching her.  Her mind was somewhere else, she thought she had wanted this so badly but, now that the option was in front of her, she wasn't so sure. He laid her down on her bed and began taking his pants off. James was one inch from her when she said, no. He insisted and she responded with, no. Jill began to cry, realizing her incredible mistake. James suddenly understood the magnitude of their meeting when he thought of Mandy. He left, pissed at himself but, blaming Jill.

Mandy was babbling and Jill stopped her mid-sentence. She needed to tell her what happened. She couldn't bear to think of losing her best friend, her boyfriend, and possibly ending her best friend's relationship in the process. She told her what happened but, said it was a past experience, not wanting Mandy to know that it was James she spoke of. Jill got it off of her chest, tears streaming down her face as Mandy watched her, curious. Mandy wondered what had provoked such a sudden response, reflecting that although Jill had clearly made a mistake in her past, what did it mean to her? She took time away from Jill after that, wondering if it had something to do with her or if it was just something Jill needed to say out loud.
